SMI was incorporated in 1981 to develop microwave sensors for intrusion alarm applications. Several sophisticated new sensors were developed and SMI's Security Systems Division became the world's leading manufacturer of exterior microwave intrusion sensors. In 1987, SMI established the Microwave Products Division (MPD) and began production of high performance microwave connectors for millimetre wave applications.

SMI has developed families of microwave connectors, including Super SMA (27 GHz, 165?C), 3.5mm, 2.92mm, 2.40mm, 3.5mm, N, TNC, SSMA, and BMA/OSP.
