Over the Range Microwaves
The most popular built-in model is the over-the-range unit.
Also referred to as 'OTR's' (over-the-range), micro/hood combos are a very convenient way to free up valuable counter space by combining the ventilation system and microwave into one efficient unit. The market for this product has expanded considerably over the past five years. Over half a dozen manufacturers provide a wide assortment of colours (including white, black, bisque, and stainless) as well as man features (including turn-tables, temperature probes, & convection cooking).
OTR microwaves have a built-in fan with a typical airflow rating of 300 CFMs. These products can be vented from the top or rear with a simple adjustment of the baffle and can also be re-circulated using an optional charcoal filer kit. In most homes, you can replace your existing hood and retrofit a new OTR microwave. Your salesperson will be more then happy to discuss installation services should you need it.
The only drawback to the-over-the-range is unit is its smaller size. The interior is most comparable to a medium-sized oven. It can accommodate most plates and dishes, with the exception of very large ones. It may be a good idea to test the oven with your favourite dish to make sure it fits.
Included ventilation fans are rated in CFM (cubic feet per minute). The higher the CFM, the better the unit will draw out steam and grease. Most fans have two speeds and some can be noisy. These fans may be vented or non-vented, or work for both types of installation. Vented units will need to be connected to ductwork. Make sure the unit is compatible with the type of ductwork you have. Non-vented units will often contain a charcoal filter. Some filters are dishwasher safe, and some will require occasional replacement. You will also want to investigate the lighting that comes with the unit. It will serve to illuminate your range top. Check to see how high a wattage of bulb can be used. Also, remember to carry accurate measurements of your space with you. In some instances a trim kit may be needed to fill in space on the sides.
For over-the-range models, appliance stores and design centres are often your best bet. They may be better equipped to answer your questions and show you the differences between models. Mass merchants, home centres, and electronics stores tend to offer the top-selling brands and have a larger selection of low- to mid-priced units. These stores offer some attractive prices for over-the-range units as well.
If you have an existing hood, in most cases your old hood can be replaced with a new 'over-the-range' microwave. These units share a standard width of 30" inches and can be vented straight up or out the back. Make sure though, that you have enough height clearance to accommodate a micro/hood combo unit. Discuss details with your salesperson. (Typically you need 16-18" inches separating the surface of the cook top from the bottom of the unit.)
