California Microwave Systems

California Microwave Systems, formerly the Information Systems Division of California Microwave Inc., is an operating unit of Northrop Grumman Corporation's Baltimore, Md., based Electronic Systems sector (ES). It was purchased by Northrop Grumman in a $93 million cash transaction that closed in April 1999.

The new unit retains the California Microwave name. The group is now part of Electronic Systems' System Development and Technology Division.

California Microwave Systems specializes in airborne reconnaissance and surveillance systems, government ground-based satellite communications systems, communications gateway systems and mission planning. The unit's customers include the U.S. military services, other U.S. government agencies and international defence organizations.

Airborne reconnaissance and surveillance systems include radar, electro-optical systems and communications systems deployed on a variety of multifunctional manned and unmanned airborne platforms.

Government ground-based satellite communications systems include large, fixed-base satellite communications terminals as well as small, mobile, lightweight, multiple-band communications systems.

Mission planning involves the use of computer-aided systems to provide mission planners with checklists of activities necessary to ensure a successful mission by the war fighter.

In addition to a number of small offices and field sites worldwide, California Microwave Systems' major locations include three sites in Maryland: Airborne Systems and business unit headquarters in Belcamp; Aviation Integration in Hagerstown; Communications Systems in Annapolis Junction; and the Ground Information Systems site in Woodland Hills, California.

Northrop Grumman's Electronic Systems sector, headquartered in Baltimore, is a leading designer, systems integrator and manufacturer of defence electronics and systems, airspace management systems, marine systems, precision weapons, space systems, and automation and information systems.
