How to use aluminium foil safely, the benefits of increased conductivity of aluminium and best practice.

Using Aluminium foil in the microwave

Aluminium foil containers are safe to be used in the microwave when used as directed.

Use a shallow container as microwave energy only enters food from the top, so use shallow trays only.

Remove any metal lid or aluminium foil wrap from the aluminium foil container. Make sure the food almost fills the container. Loosely cover the aluminium foil container with microwave-safe plastic wrap, paper towel or wax paper. This prevents splattering and traps steam for faster cooking.

Place the aluminium foil container on a microwavable plate or glass dish. Position the aluminium foil container in the centre of the microwave oven - at least one inch from the side walls. The aluminium foil must not touch the sides of the oven, other metal, such as a metal turntable, or another container. To prevent sparking make sure the container is not touching any metallic surface.

Cook or heat food ensuring food is cooked properly before serving. Due to the excellent heat conductivity of aluminium, many foods heat more evenly in foil containers, but where appropriate foods should be stirred as usual.
